Rebecca Riley

Rebecca Riley graduated from Georgia College in Fall 2009 as a Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA. After obtaining a B.B.A in Management Information Systems, she decided to further her education with a Masters of Management Information Systems. To help pay her way through Graduate School, Rebecca works as a graduate assistant (GA) for Dr. Marshall. As a GA, she monitors the servers, registers students for the Academic Alliance program, works on websites, aids students, and performs research. This is her second semester working as a GA. The challenge of balancing work and class is enjoyable to Rebecca, who currently maintains her 4.0 GPA and is scheduled to graduate in Spring 2011.

Outside of Georgia College, Rebecca co-runs Digital Space Frog (DSF). DSF has produced several websites for clients, ranging from small-scale charity websites (kimatkins.net) to large-scale CMS websites (oconeeregional.com). DSF also produces free service websites such as GradeShark.com, which helps students track and manage their grades. You can visit DSF online at digitalspacefrog.com. After graduating in Spring 2011, Rebecca hopes to continue to run Digital Space Frog.

Career Highlight: Yvonne Michelle Vallentine

GCSU's alumna Yvonne Michelle Vallentine graduated in 2002 with a Master of Management Information Systems. She is currently a Senior Analyst/Project Manager. Her role is to provide consulting support to clients, including Data Modeling, IT Project Management, standardizing IT procedures for an international environmental consulting firm, network support and security recommendations.

We asked Yvonne how her graduate degree has helped her in her career and what advice she had to offer potential and current graduate students and here is what she had to say.

"The program at Georgia College gave me the tools and knowledge to manage projects and people efficiently. I had been managing for many years before obtaining my Master's degree, but there were many things I either didn't know, or had not perfected. I learned the importance of standards, communication and understanding the relationship between a company's goals and Information Technology (it's not all about the technical side). And it also gave me an advantage in the job market, as many companies are now requiring (or give preference) to those with Master's degrees."

"The advice I would give to others would be to apply what you learn. Don't assume that "book knowledge" is not applicable in the real world experience. Real world experience gives you the ability to apply the book knowledge in a beneficial manner. And never underestimate the value of Project Management Principles and Methodologies. The lack of applying a structured approach to solving problems is the downfall of many companies and individuals. Don't negate the values of things like PMP certification, ITIL etc. More than likely you have been applying these principles just from a common sense standpoint, but these principles will give you a competitive edge."
